Migration of 220.000 files from iGrafx to Microsoft Visio at Ford Motor Corp (Detroit).
Problem description and scenario
Ford Motor Corp (Detroit) planned to consolidate the different graphic tools that were in use. The decision was made to consolidate to Microsoft Visio as the only graphical platform. Over the years however a huge amount of files for process documentation were created in iGrafx, recreating the files in Visio manually was impossible due to the huge amount of files.
The demand of the customer
The customer needed a solution that met the following criteria:
- 1:1 migration of iGrafx files to Microsoft Visio
- Automatic conversion of iGrafx diagram files to Visio including the migration also of non-visual information like comments or hyperlinks
- Server based converstion tool giving end users the ability to convert a single iGrafx file to Visio
- No permanent administration and conversion efforts for the IT department, the user should be given an environment to convert files on their own
The solution: The maguro DataAssist MultiConverter Tools Suite
The MultiConverter server is a product for the automatic conversion of huge amounts of files to Microsoft Visio. The product converts from Corel Draw, Corel Designer and all ABC FlowCharter and iGrafx versions up to 2009 to Microsoft Visio.
For this specific task the server information was expanded by a directory monitoring solution and a web interface connected the Ford specific authentification system, so every user could upload files through the web interface to the MultiConverter server and download the files after conversion in the Visio file format.
Implementation and technologies
In addition to the installation of the MultiConverter Server Edition all tasks and adaptations were completed in 2 weeks on-site. The following technologies were used:
